Volunteer Opportunities
Education Committee
Work as part of a team to help Fitchburg Fields design and schedule classes and hands-on training opportunities for the public by recruiting volunteers and/or paid presenters. Determine appropriate course topics and venues. Help create educational materials and handouts for classes offered. Assist during educational activities with set-up, clean-up, registration, etc. Farmer's Market Outreach
We need volunteers to staff our informational booth at the downtown Madison Farmer's Market on Saturdays. We will have fliers, 3-D models, picture displays and sign-up sheets on our table. Our goal is to educate the public about Fitchburg Fields and our current projects, namely teaching people how to garden organically and engage the community to help supply those in need with healthy produce. You could work alone or in pairs (the table is likely to small for more than two at a time).
We also need help passing out fliers at the Fitchburg Farmer's Market on Thursday afternoons anytime from 3-6 pm. We will not have a booth at this Market, but would still like to take the opportunity to educate the public about us. Food Preservation Instructors
We need qualified food preservation instructors to teach workshops such as freezing fruits and vegetables, canning salsa and making jams, jellies and pickles. We want to offer the community opportunities to learn self-reliant skills that will help them provide healthy, affordable food to their families. By teaching them the skills to preserve their own food, you would be helping them stretch the family food budget and have the satisfaction of knowing exactly what is in the food they are eating.
Requirements: Qualified instructors include Master Food Preservers, Certified Chefs, Commercial Business Operator (Farmer's Market Vendor), Certified Food Processors and others with similar training and experience. Master Food Preserver courses will be offered in several Wisconsin locations this summer - if you are interested in taking the course, please let us know to include you on our instructor list for the fall. Fund Raising Committee
Be part of a team helping Fitchburg Fields with fund raising. Learn how to make major donor visits, help with researching governmental and private funding sources, participate in grant writing, compile background and supporting materials for presentations, work with Internet Committee members to research and launch internet fund raising efforts, help plan fund raising events and more. Garden Maintenance & Harvest
Help a team of fellow gardeners to water, weed, and harvest vegetables and herbs from our organic Teaching/Food Pantry Garden. Produce grown is donated to local food pantries and used for our cooking and preserving classes.
No experience is necessary - we have gardeners of all ages and experience levels. Part of our mission is to teach - if you are a novice gardener, our lead volunteer will do just that!
We have most of the supplies you'll need on site or you are welcome to bring your own tools. Bringing garden gloves and your own drinking water is recommended, as is dressing for the weather and general garden tasks. Garden Skill Instructor
Know how to garden organically? Have techniques or knowledge you would like to share with others such as planting by the moon signs, composting or how to build a root cellar? We need you to help us teach novice and intermediate gardeners how to get the most out of the growing season and provide healthy food to their family, friends and neighbors. Graphic Design
Fitchburg Fields needs help creating print advertising materials for our events and educational workshops. Qualified candidates for this opportunity need to have good working knowledge in either QuarkXPress or InDesign, as well as Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator to manipulate graphics. Applicants should be well-versed in page layout, with some experience setting up ads, schedules and forms. You will need to know when to, and how to, create a hi-resolution file and when to create a lo-resolution pdf or jpg file for Web use. Access to quality clip art or photos to use legally in depicting appropriate subject matter to enhance our message is required. Photographer
A picture is worth a thousand words and we need to spread the word about Fitchburg Fields! We need someone to photograph our Teaching/Food Pantry Garden and our dedicated volunteer gardeners in action. Photos may be taken during any of our scheduled garden shifts or events. Digital photos need to be in jpeg or similar format to be used in newsletters and on our website. Full credits will be given to you! Post Fliers for Events and Workshops
We need volunteers to help us post informational fliers on kiosks and local business bulletin boards. The fliers tell people about our upcoming events, workshops, dinners, and more. If you have time to pick up and post fliers at places that you frequent - you are exactly who we are looking for! Press Release Writer
We need one or two volunteers to draft press releases for our events, workshops and garden work days. We can provide samples to follow and will review drafts for final submission, but need help getting the drafts started. If you have writing skills, enthusiasm for our mission and some creativity, this is the opportunity for you! Publicity Committee
Promote educational and hands-on gardening skill training opportunities to the general public through press releases, media announcements, newsletter articles, print ads, posters, listserv postings, radio interviews, staffing booths at local events, etc. Arrange for events and training sessions to be photographed or videographed. Spring Internship
Small-scale Organic Crop Production Internship
Duration: February 2 to May 11, 2013
Supervisor: Phyllis Hasbrouck
Interns who commit to the Fitchburg Fields 2013 spring growing season have the opportunity to learn a variety of vegetable production skills. They will also learn about the issues that drive the local foods movement in the United States, and about the skills needed to staff or direct a non-profit organization with grassroots funding. This is a hands-on, work-based educational opportunity during which interns will work closely with their supervisor and volunteers in the field.
In addition to the on-site guidance from experienced gardeners and organizers, the interns will be given articles to read and films to watch, to enhance their understanding of the globalized, mechanized food system that exists now, and the beginnings of the local and organic food system that is being created around the country. Other educational goals include learning about volunteer and non-profit management, garden design, seed starting, seed saving, and the logistics of organic crop production.
We think that this internship offers a great opportunity to students who are intrigued with any of the following ideas: growing their own food; creating a career within the local foods movement; or creating or working for a non-profit organization. Phyllis Hasbrouck, the interns' supervisor, is the co-founder and Executive Director of Fitchburg Fields, an experienced gardener, and a Master Food Preserver. We are looking for self-starting, confident individuals who are good at listening to and learning from others.
